The Child Care Licensing Program strives to provide preventive, protective, and quality services to children in care by ensuring that licensed facilities meet established health and safety standards through monitoring facilities, providing technical assistance, and establishing partnerships with providers, parents, and the child care community.

All children and families, regardless of age, ethnicity, cultural background, gender, socioeconomic status, or ability, are afforded the same protections under law and regulations for child care facilities. As a general rule, any child day care program planning to serve three or more children for more than three hours a day on a regular basis must obtain a license or registration. Before becoming licensed or registered, the applicant must show that the proposed child day care program meets requirements established to promote the health and safety of children in care.

In-person orientations are scheduled on a regular basis throughout California. There is an orientation fee and it is nonrefundable , so be sure that you meet the qualifications for a license before you sign up for an orientation.

You may sign up for an in-person orientation by viewing the orientation schedules and contacting your local Regional Office. Online orientations are available as soon as you register. You must be familiar with all Family Child Care Home licensing laws and regulations. You must complete and submit all the information and forms required in the application packet.
